Wisdom of History
The Prayer of Moses
The Prayer of Moses: Establish the Work of Our Hands
Teach us to number our days aright
That we may gain a heart of wisdom…
Establish the work of our hands.Psalm 90:12,17
So you think you’ve got it tough? Wish you had a “magic wand” to make your troubles go away? Want a “silver bullet” to establish the Work of your hands—spreading Light and overcoming Darkness?
Want to be like Moses so you can part the waters of the Red Sea to escape when you’re threatened, get water from a rock when you’re thirsty, and get food from the sky when you’re hungry?
Be careful what you wish for! The grass always looks greener on the other side of the fence.
The reality about Moses’ life is far different from these snippets and stereotypes that we carry away from movies and children’s Sunday School stories. His life was full of troubles and sorrows.
Such will be the experiences of anyone who wants God to establish the work of his or her hands, spreading Light and overcoming Darkness. Be ready (Matthew 25)! Trouble and sorrow are coming—for you personally and for all who unite to spread Light and overcome Darkness.
There will be many times when you personally—and all who unite to spread Light and overcome Darkness—will say this prayer of Moses:
Lord, you have been our dwelling place
throughout all generations.
Before the mountains were born
or you brought forth the earth and the world,
from everlasting to everlasting you are God.
…a thousand years in your sight
are like a day that has just gone by,
or like a watch in the night…
The length of our days is seventy years—
or eighty if we have the strength;
yet their span is but trouble and sorrow,
for they quickly pass, and we fly away…
Teach us to number our days aright,
that we may gain a heart of wisdom…
May the favor of the Lord our God rest upon us;
establish the work of our hands for us—
yes, establish the work of our hands.
Psalm 90
