Overcoming Darkness

The Total Eclipse: Shielded by a Sticker

We saw police cars many times. I took comfort from a sticker on my window that we received for donating to a charity that helped police. That made me think about the “sticker” that the LORD God has placed on my life—Jesus. I didn’t have to pay anything for this sticker. But it wasn’t free. It cost Jesus his life.

My wife and I drove more than 2,000 miles on our round trip to see the Total Solar Eclipse in Killeen, Texas on April 8, 2024.

We saw police cars many times. I took comfort from a sticker on my window that we received for donating to a charity that helped police.

Any police officer approaching the driver’s door would see the sticker.

In theory, making a donation and displaying the sticker has no affect whatsoever on whether a police office will give you a ticket. Nevertheless, it’s comforting to know that the police officer will see the sticker if he’s thinking about giving me a ticket.

That made me think about the “sticker” that the LORD God has placed on my life—Jesus! This “sticker” saves me from sin.

I didn’t have to pay anything for this sticker. But it wasn’t free. It cost Jesus his life.

Jesus bought this “sticker” for us once and forever with his blood on the Cross! (Hebrews 7:24-28; Hebrews 9:11-15; 1 Corinthians 15:1-4,57).

A thousand years before the Crucifixion and Resurrection of Jesus, the Passover revealed this same Amazing Grace of the LORD God.

On the night when the firstborn sons of Egypt were slain, the Israelites were commanded to cover their doors with the blood of a slain lamb. When the Angel of the LORD saw the blood on the door, he passed over that house, letting everyone inside live. (Exodus 12:12-13).

And so, the LORD God entered into a covenant with the people of Israel, beginning the Ten Commandments by saying: “I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.” (Exodus 20:1-2).

On the night before he was tortured and crucified, Jesus met with his disciples in the Upper Room “to celebrate the Passover.” (Matthew 26:18). He realized that the next day he himself was going to become the “Passover Lamb” that was slain to save all those who marked the doors of their lives with the “sticker” of his blood.

Jesus said, “This cup [of wine] is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.” (Luke 22:19-20).

On the Cross the next day, Jesus poured out his blood, establishing a new covenant between the LORD God and all Humanity, freeing us from lives enslaved to sin. (Ephesians 1:7; Hebrews 7:22,26-27; Hebrews 8:6-13; Hebrews 12:22-24; Hebrews 13:20-21; Galatians 3:26-29).

As John the Baptist said about Jesus: “Look, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.” (John 1:29).
