Seeing & Hearing

Singing in Choir

I have good relative pitch. I can tell if I’m above or below the correct pitch. But I can’t find the right pitch—the perfect pitch—unless I have a good singer standing next to me. Or unless I can hear the notes from the organ or piano. Otherwise, my pitch goes astray. (Isaiah 53:6). I think a similar thing is true as we follow the Way of Jesus.

For many years, I sang in the church choir.

I enjoyed it.

But I never sang a solo. And I barely managed to sing in a quartet.

Why?

I have good relative pitch. I can tell if I’m above or below the correct pitch.

But I can’t find the right pitch—the perfect pitch—unless I have a good singer next me.  Or unless I can hear the notes from the organ or piano. Otherwise, my pitch goes astray. (Isaiah 53:6).

I think a similar thing is true as we follow the Way of Jesus.

We can’t “sing” the correct pitch unless we surround ourselves with good role models to follow at church and in a small group.

We can’t “sing” the right pitch unless we immerse ourselves in the teachings of Jesus.

We can’t “sing” the perfect pitch unless we are guided by the Spirit to sing with love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. (Galatians 5:22-23).

THINGS TO THINK ABOUT

Do you surround yourself with good role models? Why? How?

Do you immerse yourself in the teachings of Jesus? Why? How?

Are you guided by the Spirit? Why? How?
