Overcoming Darkness

Pandemic Wisdom: I Was Glad When I Went into the House of the LORD

When I entered the church building again for worship services after the Pandemic receded, I thought of the verse in Psalms that says: “I was glad when they said unto me, ‘Let us go into the house of the LORD.’” (Psalm 122:1 KJV). Together again, we worshipers entered the church building, giving grateful thanks and praise to the LORD. Why? “For the LORD is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations!” (Psalm 100:5).

For over a year during the Pandemic, I did not attend a worship service in person.

During much of this time, churches stopped holding worship services in person. We only “met” using FaceBook, YouTube, or some other technology.

Even after worship services resumed in person, I did not return until after I was fully vaccinated and the percentage of infected people decreased.

Like Noah after the Flood, I patiently waited until the “flood waters” receded and the “ground” became completely dry. (Genesis 8:1-19).

When I entered the church building again for worship services, I thought of the verse in Psalms that says: “I was glad when they said unto me, ‘Let us go into the house of the LORD.’” (Psalm 122:1 KJV).

I will always be thankful for the technologies that enabled us to continue worshiping together during the Pandemic.

Yet, hearing and seeing on an iPad isn’t nearly as good as hearing and seeing inside a church building full of other worshipers.

The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

Singing together with other worshipers!

Praying together with other worshipers!

Hearing the Word of the LORD together with other worshipers!

Giving grateful praise together with other worshipers, as we:

“Shout for joy to the LORD, [with] all the earth.

   Worship the LORD with gladness;

   come before him with joyful songs.

Know that the LORD is God—

   It is he who made us, and we are his.

   We are his people, the sheep of his pasture.” (Psalm 100:1-3).

Giving grateful praise together with other worshipers who are once again able to:

“Enter [the LORD’s] gates with thanksgiving

   and his courts with praise.” (Psalm 100:4)

And so—together again—we:

“[G]ive thanks to [the LORD] and praise his name.

For the LORD is good and his love endures forever;

   his faithfulness continues through all generations!” (Psalm 100:4-5).
