Overcoming Darkness

Irresistible Hurricanes of the Holy Spirit

I was distraught, distressed and depressed after watching the embarrassing presidential debate on September 29, 2020. But then I took heart. I’m in Florida and I thought of hurricanes. Hurricanes are chaotic and dangerous. But they are also full of wind and water. The Holy Spirit is symbolized by wind and water. (John 3:5-8; 4:13-14; 7:37-39). Therefore, this moment of chaos and danger in America can—and I pray will—lead to irresistible hurricanes of the Holy Spirit in our lives, in our families, in our nations, and in our civilizations.

What will these irresistible hurricanes of the Holy Spirit bring?

We shall overcome those—including ourselves—who sow “hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy.” (Galatians 5:19-21).

We shall overcome these evils in our lives, in our families, in our nations, and in our civilizations by sowing “love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.” (Galatians 5:27-28).

In our struggle to overcome these evils in our lives, in our families, in our nations, and in our civilizations, “[t]he only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love.” (Galatians 5:6).

Therefore, in our lives, in our families, in our nations, and in our civilizations, “[l]et us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest, if we do not give up.” (Galatians 6:10).
